Instead of reinventing the wheel, the new model retains the same formula that made the predecessor so popular, but adds USB-C, better noise cancellation and a longer battery life.

These over-ear Bose headsets come with a premium feel and look, just like the QC 35 II headphones that preceded them. The headband, made of plastic, provides an incredibly solid feel due to the hinges made of metal at pivot points. It also features the familiar ratcheting mechanism whenever you extend or retract the ear cups. The cups are cushioned and feature soft pads that can be worn over your ears without placing pressure on your head. When folded, they weigh 238 grams. They can be paired with a coat or sweater since they can be worn even when not on the head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones, the QC45s do not provide the best sound at this price point. The frequencies are flat and lack the detail that more expensive headphones may be able bring out. The upper registers are boosted which is acceptable for most music genres but can be problematic for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is good, but lacks punch.

One thing that's not included is the ability to pause playback whenever you take the headset off. This is a standard in this price range and is something Bose's competitors have been offering for years. Another omission was the lack of an in-app EQ. Bose offers preset EQs within the app, but it would be nice if there was an option to manually control.

You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 with support for multipoint and the more advanced codecs like aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust the volume and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s come with four microphones that are built-in to pick up your voice when on the phone. The headphones have good call quality, but they don't permit you to mute the voice during playback as other wireless headphones. Update: A firmware upgrade for the QC45s came out in February 2022 included manual settings for EQ to the audio app. This is a great upgrade.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand that produces high-performance headphones. They are well-known for their comfort and style that let listeners know that they're listening something special. Their first foray into wireless noise cancelling headphones the Bathys are stunning headphones that look and sound great. They also come with a built in high performance USB DAC which means you can use them for both wireless and wired listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play bluetooth headphone music for up to 30 hours. We actually got more from them and got over 40 hours on average out of one charge. If you require a recharge, there's an indicator light on the right ear cup that turns red when the earphone needs to be charged.

For a pair of headphones at this price, they come with lots of features. They support multiple devices at once and feature automatic pairing. (You have to select your source device each time you listen.) The headphones have built-in microphones that can be used with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones come with an easy-to use interface that makes it simple to control music and make calls.

For headphones with over-ear connectivity, the Bathys excel in our test of noise cancellation. They cut down the sound of the surrounding environment by about 9 decibels on average. They aren't as good as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 and Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless, but it is still effective.

The Bathys headphones did well in our headphone sound tests. Their frequency response was generally similar to the SoundGuys headphone curve, with only minor deviations in the mids and bass. The Bathys are bassy sound profile which can make instruments, vocals and cymbals appear unreal.

You can wear them anywhere without worrying that others will listen to your music. Their mic has passable recording quality through Bluetooth with only a slight distortion in the mid to the treble range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new version of the company's most popular Bluetooth headsets. The last pair, the Momentum 3, was a solid but unspectacular entry into the category. The new model improves on the previous model with more sleek design, better gesture controls, and a huge battery life.

The improvements are subtle but add up to an over-ear set of headphones that feel like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s lay flat and aren't foldable however they come with a nice hardshell case to protect them while on the go. The Momentum 4s are also non-device-specific, similar to other Bluetooth headphones of recent times, like the ones from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They work with both Apple iPhones as well as Android phones, but they do not have the AirPods' extra features like Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious change here is the massive battery, which claims up to 60 hours of playback when noise cancellation enabled. That's easily double what most of the competitors offer and enough for a long-distance trip without worrying about finding an outlet to charge them.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 rating with a focus on their audio quality and ANC as their main strengths. The only issue he has is that they lack a sense of weight in the mids and treble, meaning that orchestral music tends to sound flat rather than grand. The bass is smooth and well-rounded however, it can be overemphasized and can cause fatigue in songs with strong bass lines such as the drums that are pounding in As I Lay Dying's Forever. The cymbals can sound smoky rather than full and there's no feeling of depth in the lows.

The Momentum 4s are comfy and aren't likely to put too much pressure on your neck or ears. However, they can be difficult to wear around the house or during longer listening sessions. They will move about on your head in a flurry of head movements. This could cause them to unexpectedly wake up and can cause distraction during music or calls. Fortunately, they shut down after 15 minutes of rest by default, and can be manually switched off by pressing the power button.
